When I was quite young, my family moved to Grand Prairie,
Alberta in Northern Canada. We plowed up our back yard and planted
potatoes, corn, beans, tomatoes, and other vegetables. My father
would take me hunting for ducks in farmer’s fields in
the fall. We also fished the rivers and lakes. Three years later
we returned to the United States and lived in rural Northern
Washington. The fields and forests were once again my playground.
I learned to gather wild mushrooms, berries, apples from abandoned
orchards, as well as clams and oysters from the nearby bays
and harbors.
These early childhood experiences taught me of the abundance
of nature to provide both food and medicine, and those memories
followed me into adulthood.
After getting out of the U.S. Navy in 1975 I moved to Eugene,
Oregon to attend the University of Oregon and graduated from
the Journalism school there with a Bachelor of Science degree.
During that time my childhood interest in plant medicine became
a hobby. Largely self taught at that time, I used household
herbal remedies to treat coughs and colds, upset tummies, restless
sleep, and the usual cuts, bruises and scrapes.
In the mid 1980’s, I moved to Portland, Oregon to work
as a Photo Lab Technician. I also began to study Tai Chi with
Yu Shaowen at the U.S. Wushu Center, and studied Western herbalism
with Becky Stinson, local herbalist and teacher.
The practice of Tai Chi, and formal studies of herbal medicine
combined lead me to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
In Chinese Medicine I found an ancient holistic medical system
which integrated acupuncture and herbal medicine into a nature-based
system of diagnostics and treatment. As my investigation into
TCM deepened, so did the realization that it was time for me
to change careers.
After attending night school for two years to complete prerequisites
in Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and Chemistry, I enrolled
at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.
There I was awarded Honors for my work in such classes as Chinese
Herbal Medicine, Chinese Medical Theory, and Diagnostics and
Treatment.
One of the things that fascinates me about TCM is that it addresses
not only symptoms, or Branch, of health concerns, but is able
to diagnose and treat the Root cause. The Root is the deeper
imbalances, excesses and deficiencies, which are related to
the symptoms. In this way, true healing can take place, not
only at the physical level, but even at the emotional and spiritual
levels as well.
Above and beyond that, I cherish the trusting healing relationships
I am able to develop with my clients.
Currently I have a Master Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, a Diplomat
of Acupuncture from the National Commission of Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine, am an Adjunct Professor of Herbal Medicine
at the Australasian College of Health Sciences, and am a certified
instructor of Essence Qigong.
I am currently licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners
to practice Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
I hope to bring all my skills and experience to understanding
and addressing your health concerns when you visit Lake Road
Acupuncture and Massage.
